To find the right therapist in India, start by identifying what you need help with, then look for an RCI-registered clinical or counselling psychologist β€” or a psychiatrist if medication may be involved β€” who has experience with your concern. Book a first consultation to check the fit, because the "right" therapist is as much about rapport as it is about credentials. If you would like help getting matched to the right professional, you can speak to the Mindtalk team.

Decide What Kind of Help You Need First

Before searching for names, it helps to get clear on what you are looking for support with β€” for example anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties, trauma or stress at work. Different therapists specialise in different areas, and some focus on particular groups such as children, couples or people with a specific condition. Matching your main concern to a therapist's area of focus makes a real difference to how useful the work feels. You do not need a formal diagnosis to start; a short description of what has been hard lately is enough for a therapist to point you in the right direction. If relationship difficulties are part of the picture, for instance, a therapist with couples or family experience may be the better fit.

It also helps to notice how long things have felt difficult and how much they are affecting daily life β€” sleep, work, studies, appetite and relationships. You do not have to label it correctly; working that out is part of what an assessment is for. Jotting down two or three specific situations that have been hard recently gives a new therapist a concrete starting point and makes the first session more useful.

Psychologist, Psychiatrist or Counsellor β€” What's the Difference?

These titles are often used interchangeably, but they mean different things. A clinical or counselling psychologist provides therapy and, in India, is registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI); psychologists do not prescribe medication. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose conditions and prescribe medication, which matters for moderate-to-severe depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis and some other conditions. A counsellor offers supportive guidance and can be very helpful for everyday stress and life transitions, though training varies more widely. To understand the therapy side in more detail, see our explainer on what a clinical psychologist does. Many people end up working with more than one professional at once.

As a rough guide, if your main need is to talk something through and learn coping strategies, a psychologist or counsellor is usually the right starting point. If you suspect a condition that may need medication, or symptoms are severe, beginning with a psychiatrist β€” or a service that has both under one roof β€” makes more sense. There is no wrong door: professionals routinely refer to one another when a different kind of support is needed.

How to Check a Therapist's Credentials (RCI Registration)

In India, the clearest credential check for a clinical psychologist is RCI registration, which confirms recognised training and a licence to practise. Beyond that, look for relevant qualifications β€” typically an MA, MSc or MPhil in psychology β€” and, importantly, experience with the specific issue you are facing. RCI registration is a useful, factual checkpoint, but it is not the only marker of a good therapist; counsellors and psychotherapists with strong training can also help, particularly for everyday concerns. The aim is to confirm that the person is properly qualified and experienced, not to disqualify everyone outside one register.

You can also look at how a therapist describes their training and the concerns they work with. Genuine experience with your specific issue often matters as much as the exact degree held, so it is worth reading their profile or asking about it. If anything is unclear, it is perfectly acceptable to ask a clinician directly about their qualifications and registration before you book β€” a professional will not mind the question.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

A short list of questions makes the first contact much easier. Consider asking: What approach or methods do you use, and why? How much experience do you have with my kind of concern? What are your fees and how long is each session? Do you offer online or in-person sessions, and in which languages? What is your cancellation policy? None of these are awkward to ask β€” good therapists expect them, and the answers help you picture what working together would be like. Treat the first session partly as your own assessment of whether this feels like the right fit.

It is also worth asking how they typically structure the work β€” whether it is open-ended or more goal-focused, and roughly how many sessions people with similar concerns tend to need. You will not always get a precise answer, but a clear, honest response is itself a good sign. Pay attention to how you feel in the conversation: feeling listened to and not judged matters as much as any credential.

Where to Find a Therapist (Online and In-Person)

There are several reliable routes in India. Verified platforms and established clinics let you browse clinicians and their specialisms; hospital outpatient departments offer psychiatric and psychological care; online therapy connects you to specialists anywhere in the country; and the RCI register lets you confirm a clinical psychologist's status. Mindtalk offers both online therapy across India and in-person sessions at our Bangalore centres, and you can review the clinicians and their areas of focus before reaching out. If your concern is more specific β€” for example OCD β€” a focused guide such as how to find the right therapist for OCD can narrow the search further.

When comparing options, weigh practical factors too: whether you prefer online or in-person sessions, the languages you are most comfortable in, and how easily you can attend regularly. Consistency over a few weeks tends to matter more than any single feature of a service, so choose something you can realistically keep up. If cost is a concern, ask about session length and frequency, since these affect the overall commitment as much as the per-session fee.

It's Okay to Switch Therapists

One of the most reassuring things to know is that fit matters, and it is normal not to click with the first therapist you meet. By some estimates around one in three people change therapists at least once, and doing so is a sign of taking your care seriously rather than a failure on anyone's part. If, after a couple of sessions, you do not feel comfortable or you are not seeing any movement, it is completely reasonable to try someone else. The goal is a working relationship in which you feel safe enough to be honest.

Why Choose Mindtalk?

Mindtalk helps you find the right support rather than just any appointment, with RCI-registered clinicians and a team that can match you to the right professional. We offer:

  • Counselling and psychotherapy across a wide range of concerns, from stress and anxiety to relationships and trauma
  • Online sessions across India and in-person care at our Bangalore centres, so you can choose what suits you
  • A guided matching process, so you are paired with a clinician experienced in your specific concern

If you are not sure where to begin, book a consultation β€” a short first conversation helps clarify what you need and connects you with the right therapist.
