Most people know whether they lean "quiet" or "outgoing", but few fit neatly into one box. To see where you fall on the spectrum, take the free introvert–extrovert test.

Introvert, Extrovert and Ambivert: What They Mean

  • Introvert: recharges through solitude and quieter settings. May prefer deep one-to-one conversations to large groups.
  • Extrovert: recharges through social interaction and stimulation. Often thinks out loud and enjoys groups.
  • Ambivert: sits in the middle. Can be energised by people in some situations and drained in others.

In personality psychology, extraversion is one of the Big Five traits and is measured on a continuum. "Introvert" and "extrovert" describe the two ends, and most people score somewhere in between. You can see your full profile with the Big Five personality test.

Signs You Are an Ambivert

  1. You enjoy social plans, but too many in a row exhaust you.
  2. You can lead a meeting and still prefer to work alone afterwards.
  3. Friends describe you as outgoing; family describes you as quiet (or the other way round).
  4. Your social energy depends heavily on who you are with.
  5. You are comfortable both listening and talking.

Introversion vs Shyness vs Social Anxiety

These are often confused:

  • Introversion is about energy and preference. It is not a problem to fix.
  • Shyness is nervousness or awkwardness around people, especially new people.
  • Social anxiety is an intense, persistent fear of being judged or embarrassed that leads to avoidance and distress. It is a treatable condition.

If you avoid social situations because of fear rather than preference, read our guide to introversion vs social anxiety or take the social anxiety test.

Making Your Personality Work for You

  • Introverts: schedule recovery time after big events, and choose roles with focused work.
  • Extroverts: build in social contact during remote or solo work.
  • Ambiverts: notice your energy levels and plan the week accordingly.
