Therapy Cost in India: What Sessions Actually Cost in 2026
The range of therapy fees in India is wide enough that two people can walk away with very different impressions of whether therapy is affordable. One person books a community mental health centre and pays Rs 500. Another books a senior psychiatrist at a private hospital and pays Rs 3,500. Both call it therapy. Neither figure is wrong.
This page is a cross-modality guide to what therapy actually costs in India in 2026 โ session fees, what drives the variation, how costs differ by city, and what a Mindtalk session costs.

What Therapy Costs in India in 2026
The realistic range for an individual therapy session in India in 2026 is Rs 800โRs 3,000. That range covers the large majority of working therapists. Below Rs 800 are government-subsidised or community settings. Above Rs 3,000 are senior consultant psychiatrists and specialists with international training.
| Setting | Typical range per session |
|---|---|
| Entry-level counsellor (online) | Rs 800โRs 1,200 |
| Mid-career psychologist | Rs 1,200โRs 2,000 |
| Senior psychologist or specialist therapist | Rs 2,000โRs 3,000 |
| Psychiatrist consultation | Rs 1,500โRs 4,000 |
Session length also varies. Most therapists run 50-minute sessions. The fee usually does not scale proportionally with length โ a 60-minute session is rarely priced at 20% more than a 50-minute session with the same therapist.
What Changes the Price: Credentials, Experience, City, Online vs In-Person
Credentials and training path. A counsellor with a postgraduate diploma costs less than a psychologist with an M.Phil. or PhD. A psychiatrist with MBBS + MD Psychiatry costs more than both. The credential reflects training length and scope of practice โ a psychiatrist can prescribe, a psychologist generally cannot.
Experience. A therapist in their second year of practice charges less than someone with fifteen years. More experience typically means faster formulation and a shorter overall treatment โ the per-session rate is higher but the total course is sometimes shorter.
Session format. Online sessions at the same therapist are typically at parity or slightly below in-person. The cost of the therapist's time is the same; the overhead difference is marginal.
City. Metro cities โ Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai โ have higher rates than smaller cities and towns. Online therapy has flattened this significantly: a Bangalore-based therapist on a digital platform charges the same rate regardless of where the patient sits.
Specialisation. Therapists with training in specific modalities โ EMDR, CBT for OCD, trauma-focused therapy โ sometimes charge a premium. Couples therapy is often priced higher per session than individual therapy because two people are in the room and session preparation is more involved.
Cost by Type of Therapy
Different therapy types have different typical course lengths, which affects total cost as much as the per-session rate. The links below go to the full cost sections on each treatment page rather than restating them here.
- Psychotherapy (individual): Rs 800โRs 3,000 per session. See psychotherapy for the full fee and course breakdown.
- Online therapy: Sessions on digital platforms typically match or slightly undercut in-person rates. See online therapy for the 2026 cost picture.
- Couples therapy: Often Rs 1,500โRs 3,000 per session, higher than individual because two people are present and the structure is more complex.
- Narrative therapy: A specialised modality; see narrative therapy for specifics.
The sessions above are the weekly cost. The course cost is what you actually budget for. Short-term work runs 6โ12 sessions. Longer-term work can run 20โ60 sessions over months.
Therapy Cost by City: Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi
Bangalore: Rs 1,200โRs 3,000 for mid-to-senior therapists. The city has a large supply of trained practitioners, which creates some price competition at the mid-level. Therapists in Bangalore and psychiatrists in Bangalore are bookable online at Mindtalk's published rate.
Hyderabad: Comparable to Bangalore. Similar supply and fee range โ Rs 1,000โRs 2,500 for most working therapists in the city.
Mumbai and Delhi: Tend toward the higher end of the national range. Senior practitioners in South Mumbai or South Delhi regularly charge Rs 3,000โRs 5,000. The mid-range (Rs 1,500โRs 2,500) is well represented. Online sessions from Mumbai-based therapists are typically at the national mid-range.
Smaller cities and towns: Rs 600โRs 1,500 for most in-person sessions. Online therapy with a metro-based therapist, at a metro-based rate, is often more cost-effective than finding a local specialist whose training may be more limited.
Does Insurance Cover Therapy in India?
Most standard health insurance policies do not cover outpatient mental health consultations. The typical health policy in India covers hospitalisation and day-care procedures, which does not include weekly therapy sessions.
Some corporate group health plans include a mental health benefit โ often a fixed number of sessions per year, or access to a platform. Check your policy document under "outpatient mental health" or ask HR directly. Do not assume either way.
The 2017 Mental Healthcare Act establishes parity principles, and some insurers have expanded coverage in response, but implementation is uneven across policies.
How to Get Quality Therapy Without Overpaying
Match the professional to the need. If you do not need medication, a psychologist or counsellor is clinically appropriate and costs less. Save the psychiatrist for a medication question, a diagnostic assessment, or a situation where a medical opinion adds something a psychologist cannot.
Book online. Online sessions at the same quality level cost at or below in-person. The trade-off is not quality โ it is the absence of a physical room. For most presentations, that trade-off is meaningless.
Look at platforms with standardised pricing. Independent practitioners set their own rates. Platforms that standardise pricing provide more cost predictability and typically sit at the mid-range for the market.
Commit to a block if possible. Some therapists offer a block rate if you book multiple sessions upfront โ typically 10โ15% below the per-session rate. It is worth asking explicitly.
What a Mindtalk Session Costs and What Is Included
A Mindtalk session is Rs 1,250. This covers a 50-minute video session with a licensed therapist or psychiatrist, the clinical assessment, and the agreed care plan. No additional fees for booking or session notes.
Therapists in Bangalore and psychologists in Bangalore are the booking surfaces for individual therapy. Psychiatry is available through psychiatrists in Bangalore.
The Mindtalk session price is a single, transparent figure โ there is no tiered pricing by clinician seniority on the patient-facing side.
Therapy in India is not uniformly expensive. The fee range is wide, the supply of trained practitioners in metros is large, and online platforms have made good-quality care accessible from cities that did not previously have it. The gap between what people assume therapy costs and what it actually costs tends to be the main barrier โ this page exists to close that gap.
